Research Interest
Antanas Gulbinas has completed his MD degree in Kaunas University of Medicine, Lithuania. The studies were followed by the residency and licenses of Abdominal Surgeon in Lithuania. From 1999 to 2003 he was a PhD student at Kaunas University of Medicine. In 2004, Antanas Gulbinas completed PhD thesis on “Risk factors and prognostification of the complications related to the pancreatojejunal anastomosis insufficiency after pancreatoduodenectomy.
During 2002‐2003, he was appointed as a researcher in European Pancreas Research Laboratory, Heidelberg University, Germany, where he investigated the role of transcription factor GATA‐3 in pathogenesis of pancreatic cancer. Before joining the School of Medicine of Nazarbayev University he has been working as a surgeon, professor and chief researcher in Lithuanian University of Health Sciences. Antanas Gulbinas was leading the Surgical Gastroenterology Research Lab at the Institute of Digestive research, Lithuanian University of Health Sciences.
His main research areas: diagnostics, prognosis and pathogenesis of the inflammatory and neoplastic pancreatic diseases. Recent projects focus on the role of mRNA stabilizing proteins, HSP’s and other cytoprotective molecules in the pathogenesis and course of pancreatic cancer. Studies combine both use of clinical data, tissue samples from patients and in vitro studies with pancreatic cancer cell lines. He introduced the techniques for isolation and cell culture of human pancreatic stellate cells in the Surgical Gastroenterology Research Lab.
Antanas Gulbinas is a Council member of the European Digestive Surgery (EDS), member of International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (IHPBA), Board of Lithuanian Association of Surgeons and the Research Board of United European Gastroenterology
