Research interest

Dr. Azliyati Azizan’s research training is in the area of Infectious Diseases of global public health importance. Currently, Dr. Azizan is focused on two main research topics which are the extremophiles as sources of novel antimicrobial agents, and the characterization of human papillomavirus from Kazakhstan and prevention of cervical cancer. Another related research topic of interest is on hospital associated infections caused by multidrug resistant pathogens. Dr. Azizan collaborates extensively with many scientists in research within Kazakhstan and Central Asia and also internationally in the UK and USA. As a faculty member at her previous institution at the University of South Florida (USF), Dr. Azizan embarked on research related to other infectious disease topics; her main topic of research focus had been on dengue, a disease that can be caused by one of the four serotypes of the mosquito-borne dengue virus serotypes 1, 2, 3 or 4. One area of Dr. Azizan’s research interest was on studies related to the mechanisms of antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE) of dengue virus (DENV) infection in endothelial cells, as well as development of multiplex diagnostics for dengue using the Bio-Plex microbead immunoassay (MIA).
