Strategic Academic Partner

Our strategic academic partner is the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2012 and shares Nazarbayev University School of Medicine’s goal of educating physicians who are science-based, skilled, and compassionate clinicians prepared to meet the challenges of practicing medicine in the 21st century and conducting cutting-edge research that is focused on bettering the human condition and advancing the fundamental understanding of medical science. The school is among the top ten in the United States in biomedical research funding from the National Institutes of Health, and its graduating physicians consistently perform well on the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) and move on to top residency training programs in virtually all medical specialty areas. The school is well known historically for the development of the first safe, effective vaccine against polio by Dr. Jonas Salk and his team of scientists and, more recently, for pioneering the advancement of organ transplantation as a viable clinical entity and for brain-computer interface technology that may, one day, enable people with paralyzing conditions to control robotic limbs with their brain signals alone.

dean

Welcome to Nazarbayev University School of Medicine (NUSOM). It is a privilege to be the founding Dean of NUSOM and to have the opportunity to train Kazakhstan’s future health care professionals (doctors, nurses, public health specialists) and researchers. The School aspires to be a world-class institution and to generate and sustain excellence in health education and biomedical research by creating a supportive and stimulating academic environment where creativity, life-long learning and discoveries are supported and encouraged. NUSOM has been established in conjunction with the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, one of the major academic medical centers in the U.S., to serve as the academic hub of the Republic of Kazakhstan's first integrated academic health system. It is the Republic of Kazakhstan’s first US-style MD curriculum which has been taught in English with the goal of educating future medical leaders in health care, education and biomedical research. We are also developing an integrated biomedical research program in collaboration with our international strategic partner, research centers (Nazarbayev University Center of Life Sciences) and our hospitals (University Medical Center) to translate basic science discoveries into clinical practice. Please take the time to explore our website and discover the exciting opportunities in education, research and health care offered by the School to you as a potential student, staff, faculty or collaborator.
